Some flies are born out of necessity. While we were on vacation fishing for muskies, we were running out of deer hair to make floating heads for some of the surface patterns.

The only other thing that we had that that floats was 1" thingamabobber strike indicators.

The pattern worked great and has become a favorite surface fly for pike and muskies in large sizes and smallmouth in smaller sizes.

This is a guide's favorite type of steelhead fly. It catches fish, is easy to cast, and is very quick to tie. This fly is good in tight quarters or when throwing into brush, timber, etc.

You can get away with tying flies out of nothing but flash; the trick is to use several different textures.
