muskegon male goby

The Round Goby is an invasive fish that has been making its way around the Great Lakes; they have been in the Muskegon for a while, but the population has grown dramatically.

The heaviest concentrations of these fish are between Croton Dam and Pine Street, but they are everywhere. If you look carefully around the boat launch below Croton Dam, you can see dozens of these fish. Some of them are large--8"plus.

When they are spawning, the adult males turn an inky black and stand out like a sore thumb. The smallmouth bass seem to prefer the males.

This pattern is an articulated goby pattern.Though you can fish it as your typical streamer, it works much more effectively stripped slowly along the bottom or fished under a small bobber crayfish style.

Here is the pattern sheet. For full resolution photos of gobies at our photo site, click here. For next page of fly patterns, which is about natural colored gobies, click here.
